Dance Music research
Comparison of three different music videos:
1. Sigala - Sweet Lovin' (Official Video) ft. Bryn Christopher
2. MK - 17 (Official Video)
3. CamelPhat & Elderbrook 'Cola' (Official Video)
What makes all of these music videos from the dance music genre?
- Repetitive beat
- Repeated lyrics
- Same tempo
- Same chords
- Major (Happy)
- All melodies are major pentatonic
- Use of synthesisers
- Use of samples
All of these videos have very similar qualities and when played on top of each other, it is hard to distinguish how many sons are even playing as they all have the same tempo and similar beats. This also tells how they all have the same or similar chords which also shows the dance music qualities.
Explore how the artists are using representation to appeal to their target audience in these three videos by picking out keys frames from the video to analyse.
- Set on the streets
- Diversity of characters (Race, gender, job etc.)
- Non-naturalistic qualities
- All dancing at some point in the video
- 'Hip Hop' dancing (Street dance)
- Sunny/ Hot day
- Bright colours
- Colours match skin tone
All of these artists use the same kinds of representation which is through people and setting. The type of dance branches off people and the setting is very important in a dance music video as the songs usually give of happy vibes, therefore needing a happy location and weather to represent the pathetic fallacy of the song and characters (beach, floral, bright colours, sunny, light, greenery)
What other music videos could you find from the same genre? Outline two and explain why you think they are termed dance.
1. Years & Years - King (Official Video)
2. Jonas Blue - Perfect Strangers ft. JP Cooper
These two songs and music videos possess similar qualities as the three above. The both have the same tempo and use electronic synthesisers to add the song. Also both videos have dance routines and all have a lot of different people in. They both use natural lighting whether that's through a window (Years and Years) or a sunset on a beach (Jonas Blue). King uses a mix of contemporary and hip hop dancing where as Perfect Strangers uses more of the hip hop as in the first three videos.
